These are intended the propitiate the minions of the super natural sphere and cleanse the earth in preparation of the New Year.
On the Nyepi day no fires, no lights, no vehicles and no activities. All are silent for 24 hours.
The celebration lasts three days, the days are called PENGRUPUKAN on Monday, NYEPI on Tuesday, and NGEMBAK GENI on Wednesday.
PENGRUPUK : Monday evening, 11 March 2013.
Earth purification offering. Ceremonies will be held at each village’s crossroads. Crossroads are considered magically dangerous and are favorite haunt of the numerous and bothersome evil spirits which abound in Bali, collectively known as Bhutakala. These guys cause disease, accidents and all manner of unpleasant effects. Magnificent offerings are made to the gods and ancestors, as well, but the Bhutakala are particularly well fed at this time on sacrificed animals and other distasteful goodies. The idea is to get them all to accumulate in one palace and then drive them off the island by power of the high priests who will be pronouncing their magical and sprinkling holy the water every where. This cleansing ritual is critical to guarantee the prosperity of the New Year.
The real fun begins this evening. Denpasar is definitely the best please to go. The crowds will grow and the fire crackers will go off. In the distance the throb of gamelans play wild rhythms and melodies used for demos and war. Soon come the Ogoh – Ogoh blinking eyes, horrible beasts, witches with tongues of flame, the ever present Garuda and beautiful gods and goodness. The best are the humorous. It’s a wild affair and very crowded so be prepared for fun and a bit jostling.
